The line nobody thinks about until the yard goes soft

Your service line carries every gallon the house uses, running from the utility's main under the street, through the curb stop in the meter pit near the sidewalk, and into the house through a basement wall or floor. The meter pit is the usual dividing line for ownership, though the exact split varies by district along this corridor and one phone call to your water provider settles it for good. What's rarely in dispute: the buried run across your own yard belongs to you.

Age tells you most of what will go wrong down there. In the pre-1970 housing stock of Denver, Englewood, and Littleton, that pipe is often galvanized steel, and galvanized fails twice. First it rusts closed from the inside until a second-floor shower becomes a rumor, then it weeps at a threaded joint. Prove it's the service line before anyone digs

Start at the meter, because it's the cheapest test in plumbing. Shut every fixture, kill the irrigation, then find the leak indicator on the meter face: a small triangle, a star wheel, or a spinning dial depending on your district. If it creeps with nothing running, water is moving somewhere. Now close the main valve where the line enters the house. Indicator still turning? The leak is outside, between the meter and that valve. Indicator stops? Your problem is indoors and this is the wrong page.

Then rule out the impostors, because they're common. A leaking irrigation zone valve imitates a service line leak right down to the wet patch, so isolate the sprinkler shutoff and retest. A weeping hose bib. A neighbor's line running closer to your fence than anyone realized. A hillside spring seep in Golden that shows up every May. A downspout drain quietly discharging under the lawn.

Locating comes next, and paying for it beats guessing with an excavator. On metal lines, technicians correlate the sound of pressurized water escaping through ground microphones, which is why a quiet street at 6 a.m. produces a better locate than a windy afternoon. Poly doesn't carry that sound well, so tracer gas gets pushed into the isolated line and sniffed at the surface. And before anyone breaks ground for any reason at all, call 811 and let the utilities mark gas, power, and communications. It's free, it takes a couple of days, and hitting a gas line to save that wait is how a plumbing problem becomes an evacuation.

One hole, or the whole run

A spot repair means digging a single pit at the leak, cutting out the bad section, and coupling in new pipe. On copper or poly with an obvious cause, that's an honest answer and the cheap one. On galvanized, a spot repair is a coin flip you will play again, because the rest of that line is the same age, in the same soil, with the same tired threads.

Full replacement goes two ways. Open trench is simple, cheap on machine time, and turns your lawn into a long scar with the sprinkler system cut in half. Pipe bursting or a directional bore works from two small pits, pulls new HDPE along the old path, and leaves most of the yard alone, which matters enormously once mature landscaping, a driveway, or a flagstone walk sits over the run.

Along the Front Range, a single-point repair in open lawn commonly lands in the four figures once you count locating, excavation, the repair, and backfill. A full replacement from meter to house typically runs several thousand, with length, depth, driveway or sidewalk crossings, and frozen ground pushing toward the top of the band. Restoration is the wildcard nobody budgets: sod, concrete, and asphalt are usually quoted separately. What replacement day looks like on your lot

Plan on no water for most of a working day. Crews open a pit at the meter and another where the line enters the house, pull or trench the new run, and set a new main shutoff valve inside while they're there. Take that upgrade. A seized gate valve is why half of every burst pipe call gets worse than it had to. Then they reconnect at the meter and flush and disinfect the new line before anybody drinks from it.

Winter rewrites the schedule. Frost in the upper couple of feet slows excavation, and some crews won't bore when the ground is locked, so a January failure can mean a temporary bypass hose running across the yard until conditions break. It's ugly, it works, and it needs heat tape and insulation to survive the nights.

Expect the ground over the new run to settle for a season. Backfill compacts, a shallow trench line reappears after the first heavy spring melt, and a wheelbarrow of soil in April usually ends it. Can a service line leak run for months without surfacing?

Is trenchless replacement always the better choice?

No. Bursting and boring need a reasonably straight path with clearance from gas, sewer, and electrical, and they can't dodge an obstacle nobody marked. Under a mature tree, a driveway, or a finished patio, trenchless saves more in restoration than it adds in equipment. Across short open lawn with sprinklers you were replacing anyway, open trench is often cheaper.
