Two water worlds, one corridor
Denver Water customers drink melted snow that fell on the Continental Divide, and it shows: hardness so low that soap lathers on contact and water heaters routinely outlive their warranties. Boulder, Longmont, and much of Lakewood and Arvada enjoy similar mountain supply. If that's your district, a whole-house softener is usually solving a problem you don't have.
Cross into Weld and Adams county groundwater territory and the story flips hard. Districts serving Firestone, Frederick, Brighton, and Commerce City deliver water carrying serious mineral load. You see it as white crust on faucets, feel it as stiff laundry, and pay for it in appliances: scale shortens water heater life, clogs aerators, and cakes dishwasher elements.
So the first honest question in any filtration conversation is your address. Everything else follows from the district.
Softeners: where they earn it and where they don't
A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium through an exchange resin, and in hard-water districts it's one of the few appliances that genuinely pays for itself: longer water heater life, half the detergent, no more scale battles. Sizing matters, grain capacity should match your actual hardness and household, and the brine discharge needs a legal drain path.
In soft-water districts the same machine is an expensive way to make already-soft water slightly salty. And everywhere, remember a softener is not a purifier: it changes mineral content, not safety.

How do I find out how hard my water actually is?
Your utility's annual consumer confidence report publishes hardness along with everything else, free. Search your district's name plus 'water quality report.' For wells, any certified lab runs a standard panel for a modest fee. Skip the free in-home theatrics; get numbers with units on them.
Will a softener make my water safe to drink?
Softening changes mineral content, not safety. Municipal water on this corridor already meets federal safety standards when it leaves the plant. If your concern is lead from old service lines, taste, or well contaminants, those call for filtration or treatment matched to the specific issue, not a softener.
Is reverse osmosis wasteful?
Older units sent several gallons to the drain per gallon produced. Modern efficient units run much tighter ratios, and the volumes involved for drinking water are small next to any sprinkler zone.
