Your lateral, the pipe nobody remembers buying
Every home on this corridor owns a private sewer lateral: the buried line running from the foundation to the city main, usually under the lawn, sometimes under the driveway, occasionally under a 70-year-old blue spruce. The city maintains the main. The lateral is all yours, and in the older two-thirds of the metro it's made of vitrified clay laid in short sections with joints every few feet.
Clay itself can last a century. The joints are the weakness. Every joint is an invitation to roots, every root is a net for paper and grease, and every net eventually becomes a wall. That's the physics behind most sewer backups from Denver to Littleton to Wheat Ridge.
Newer suburbs swapped clay for PVC, which shrugs off roots. But PVC laid over expansive Front Range clay soils has its own failure mode: settlement. The soil heaves and drops with moisture, the pipe develops a low spot, and waste collects in the sag. Plumbers call it a belly. Your drains call it a recurring backup.

Both spare the yard and both carry premiums that make more sense the more expensive your surface is. Get the scope footage first; every legitimate bid starts there.
Never approve sewer work from a verbal description alone. Ask for the recorded scope video with distance markers. A contractor confident in the diagnosis will hand it over happily, and the footage keeps every bid honest.

How do I know if my sewer line is clay or PVC?
Age is the first clue: most metro homes built before the mid-1970s started with clay, and most after run PVC or ABS. The definitive answer is a scope, which identifies material on screen. Some cities' permit archives also record past lateral replacements, worth a search before you assume.
Who's responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?

Can roots really destroy a sewer pipe?
