The shower goes cold when the dishwasher starts, or scalding when someone flushes upstairs. That's the mixing valve, not the water heater, and the repair depends mostly on whether anyone left a way to reach it. This is the honest version of that job, wall and all.

Why the temperature swings
A modern shower valve is supposed to hold your temperature when pressure changes elsewhere in the house. A pressure-balance valve does it with a small spool that slides inside the cartridge, throttling the hot side the instant the cold side drops. When that spool gums up with mineral scale or its seals go stiff, the valve stops compensating. Somebody flushes, the cold disappears, and the shower spikes.
Old two-handle valves never had that protection at all. In pre-1970 bathrooms across Denver, Englewood, and Wheat Ridge, you'll still find separate hot and cold stems feeding a tub spout, sometimes with the original brass seats in place. They work, they're rebuildable, and they will scald a kid without hesitating. Converting one to an anti-scald valve is one of the few upgrades in this trade that's about safety rather than comfort.
Not every temperature complaint is the valve. If the hot runs out fast rather than swinging back and forth, that's a tank conversation, and our water heater guide covers sizing and dip tubes. If the maximum temperature suddenly feels lukewarm, check the hot limit stop first: most single-handle valves have an adjustable ring under the handle that sets how far toward hot you can rotate, and it shifts when a handle gets reinstalled carelessly.
Test it deliberately. Run the shower, have somebody flush a toilet, and watch. A valve that's doing its job corrects within a second or two. A valve that does nothing at all is a cartridge.
Getting to the valve is the whole problem
What makes this job different from every other fixture repair is simple: the valve lives inside a wall, and the person who tiled over it was not thinking about you. Pulling a cartridge through the trim plate is straightforward when the cartridge cooperates. Replacing the valve body means opening the wall, and where that wall opens decides the whole cost.
The good news in a lot of Front Range floor plans is that the back of a tub valve often faces a closet, a hallway, or a garage instead of tile. Cutting a neat rectangle of drywall in a closet and patching it afterward is a small job. Cutting through a tiled surround is not, and matching thirty-year-old tile from a 1990s Superior or Highlands Ranch build is usually impossible.
Cartridges seize for one reason above all others: minerals. In Firestone, Frederick, Brighton, and Commerce City, hard groundwater deposits scale between the cartridge and the brass valve body until the two behave like one welded part. Denver, Boulder, and Longmont homes on soft mountain supply give up cartridges that have sat untouched for fifteen years. Same fixture, same technique, completely different afternoon.
When a cartridge won't move, force is the wrong tool. A proper cartridge puller applies straight pull with a threaded jack. Pliers and enthusiasm snap the plastic stem off inside the body, which converts a forty-dollar repair into a wall-opening job. If a stem breaks off, stop right there. That's the moment to call somebody who owns extraction tools.
Cartridge, trim, or the whole valve body
Three tiers of work, three very different numbers. A cartridge replacement with usable access is the cheap tier: the part usually runs somewhere between twenty and eighty dollars depending on brand, and Front Range labor for a straight pull-and-replace commonly sits in the low hundreds. Trim replacement, meaning handle, escutcheon, and shower arm, is cosmetic and lands in similar territory. Replacing the valve body is the expensive tier, because it means opening the wall, soldering or crimping new connections in place, and then paying somebody to make the wall look like it did before.
Some brands help you here. The major manufacturers have kept the same rough-in valve body in production for decades, so you can often update the look and the cartridge without touching the plumbing behind the tile. Off-brand and discontinued valves are where people get stuck. When nothing matches, a universal remodel plate that covers the old opening sometimes saves the tile anyway.
Get specific about scope before work starts. Who patches the drywall? Is tile work included or subcontracted out? What happens to the price if the cartridge breaks off during removal? Those three questions separate a fixed price from a surprise, and they cost nothing to ask.
One safety line, said plainly. If your shower can deliver water hot enough to scald and there are small children or older adults in the house, an anti-scald valve isn't equipment to think about next year.

A bathroom remodel is the one moment you control everything about this valve for the next twenty years. Pick a brand with a long parts history. Ask the installer to set the valve body at the right depth for your finished tile thickness, since every valve has a plaster guard marking that range and getting it wrong means the trim plate never seats flat against the wall. And put in an access panel while the framing is open.
Thermostatic valves are worth considering in larger showers and in houses with unstable pressure. Rather than only balancing pressure, they hold a set temperature using a wax element, which is why multi-head and body-spray systems normally use them. They cost more and have more to service later. In a standard tub-shower, a good pressure-balance valve is plenty of valve.
On hard water, treat cartridge service as maintenance instead of an emergency. Every few years is ordinary in Weld County, and rarely necessary in Boulder or Longmont. Softening the water changes that curve for every fixture in the house, and the same logic applies to the faucets that keep eating cartridges.
Last thing, whatever you install: find out whether anything shuts off water to just that bathroom. Most Front Range homes have no branch shutoff at all, so every future repair starts by killing the whole house. Learning that in advance beats learning it in a towel.

Why does my shower go cold when the washing machine fills?
The washer's solenoid valve grabs cold water fast, and your shower valve is supposed to compensate by cutting the hot side to match. When the pressure-balance spool inside the cartridge is scaled up or worn, it can't move quickly enough, so you feel the swing. A new cartridge fixes it in most cases, and it's the cheapest repair on this page.
Do I have to tear out tile to fix a shower valve?
Usually not. Cartridges, springs, seats, and trim all come out through the front, behind the handle and escutcheon. Tile only becomes part of the conversation when the valve body itself is cracked, obsolete, or being converted to an anti-scald design. Even then, check what's behind the wall first, because a closet or hallway on the other side often gives access without touching a single tile.
What temperature should my water heater be set to?
Around 120 degrees is the setting most manufacturers recommend, and it lowers scald risk while still supplying a hot shower. Turning the tank down is not a substitute for a working anti-scald valve, though, because temperature swings come from pressure changes at the valve rather than from the tank. Fix the valve, then set the tank sensibly.
