What a jetter actually does to a pipe

A drain cable is a drill. A jetter is closer to a pressure washer with a very long, very stiff hose and nozzles built to work backward. The head travels downstream through a cleanout, rear-facing jets push it forward and keep the hose taut, and then the operator drags it back so those same jets scour the pipe wall and sweep debris toward the access point. Wall to wall, rather than a hole through the middle.

Residential machines run somewhere between 1,500 and 4,000 psi, but pressure is the number that sells and flow is the number that works. Gallons per minute is what carries sludge out of a four-inch line. A high-pressure, low-flow unit cuts a nice channel and leaves the debris sitting right where it was.

Nozzles do the specializing. A penetrating head with a forward jet opens a fully plugged line. A rotating head spins a fine stream in a cone and strips grease and soft scale off the wall. A chisel or root head works joints where fine roots have found their way in. Swapping heads mid-job is normal, and an operator who runs one nozzle through everything isn't really jetting. He's rinsing.

It also drinks water, more than people expect. A cart machine draws off a hose bib, a trailer unit carries its own tank, and that's why the crew asks about your outside spigot before they ask about your cleanout.

Jetting versus cabling, honestly compared

Cabling wins on speed, cost, and access. It goes down a roof vent, needs no water supply, and for a one-off blockage it puts a household back in business inside an hour. What it does not do is clean. A cable bores an opening through whatever is in the way, and if that whatever is a decade of grease lining a kitchen main, the opening closes again on its own schedule.

Jetting wins on anything that coats. Grease, soap fat, sludge, sand, silt, and the greasy skin that holds fine root hairs against a clay joint. After a proper jetting the line runs near its built diameter again, and a camera pass confirms it instead of hoping.

Roots are where people get the comparison wrong. A cable with a sharp cutter head chews through a root mass efficiently, and a jetter with a root nozzle washes the joint clean and flushes the cuttings out. The pairing is what works: cut, jet, camera, then decide whether that joint needs a repair. Roots returning in six months are a pipe problem rather than a cleaning problem, which makes it a sewer line repair conversation.

What it costs, and when jetting is the wrong call

Front Range pricing puts jetting well above a standard cable job, often several times it, and the spread comes from setup as much as from time on the machine. A ground-level cleanout in the yard is the cheap version. No cleanout at all, which describes plenty of pre-1960 houses in Denver, Englewood, and Wheat Ridge, means pulling a toilet or installing an access point before anybody jets anything, and that becomes its own line on the invoice.

Most serious shops include or strongly push a camera inspection alongside jetting, and you should insist on it. Not for the sales pitch. For the veto. Jetting a line with a crushed section, a belly holding standing water, or a run of the bituminous fiber conduit used in some postwar builds, which delaminates like a soggy paper towel, can turn a drainage complaint into an excavation.

Jetting also cannot fix geometry. When a run settles into a belly, and the expansive clay soils under neighborhoods in Thornton, Parker, and Castle Rock do exactly that to buried pipe, the low spot refills with water and solids the moment the machine drives away. You get clean pipe and a recurring problem. Know that going in and put the money toward the section repair instead.

Timing a jetting job on the Front Range calendar

Season matters here more than it does in milder places. A jetter needs a live water source, and outdoor spigots are the first thing a Colorado homeowner shuts down and drains for winter. First freeze historically runs from late September up on the Palmer Divide around Monument to early October down on the plains, which makes September and the first half of October the practical window for anything involving a hose bib and a machine parked in the driveway.

Winter jetting does happen, and it costs more and takes longer, because the crew has to protect the hose, the pump, and your sillcock against a line that can freeze between passes. Will jetting damage old cast iron or clay pipe?

Sound cast iron and clay handle it fine, and scale comes off pipe that still has wall thickness left. What jetting can wreck is pipe that already failed: a cracked section, a badly offset joint, or the old bituminous fiber conduit that delaminates under pressure. That is the whole argument for running a camera before the machine, not after.

How long does hydro jetting last?

On a grease-coated kitchen main, a proper jetting commonly holds for years where a cable that only opened a channel holds for months. Roots are a different story, since jetting cleans the joint but the tree keeps growing. If backups come back within a season, the line has a defect and cleaning was never going to be the answer.

Do I need a cleanout to have a line jetted?

Practically speaking, yes. Jetter hose wants a straight downstream entry, and a ground-level cleanout is where it gets one.
