It hums and won't turn. It drips into the cabinet. It rattles like a coin in a dryer. Disposals fail in ways you can sort out in ten minutes with the power off, and knowing which sound means what keeps you from buying a unit you don't actually need.

Hum, silence, or rattle
Kill the power first, and that means the breaker, not the wall switch. A jammed disposal starts the instant it frees up, and the lugs on that flywheel swing hard. Nothing down there is worth a hand.
A hum with no rotation means the motor has power and the flywheel is stuck. The fix is usually the hex wrench that shipped taped to the side of the unit. It drops into the socket in the center of the housing bottom, and you rock the flywheel back and forth until whatever wedged between a lug and the shredder ring lets go. Cherry pits, a bottle cap, a chicken bone, half a teaspoon. Then press the red reset button underneath and try it again.
Dead silence is a different branch entirely. Either the thermal overload tripped and the reset needs pressing, or the switch failed, or the motor is finished. Rattling is the friendliest of the three sounds: something hard is loose in the chamber and comes out with tongs once the power is off.
One thing worth unlearning. Disposals have no blades. Two blunt swivel lugs fling waste outward against a stationary shredder ring, and the ring does the cutting. Sharpening a disposal with ice cubes is folklore. Ice does knock the film off the lugs, which isn't nothing, but there's no edge in there to dull.
Where disposals leak, and what each spot means
Where the water shows up tells you nearly everything, and the three failure points sit at three different heights.
Top of the unit is the sink flange. The disposal hangs from a mounting assembly clamped to a flange bedded in plumber's putty. Putty dries and shrinks after ten or fifteen years, or the snap ring slips, and water weeps into the cabinet only while the basin holds standing water. The fix is to drop the unit, scrape the old putty, re-bed the flange, and tighten the three mount screws evenly around.
The side is the discharge tube or the dishwasher inlet. A hardened gasket at the discharge elbow, or a loose clamp on the dishwasher drain hose, drips only during a drain cycle, which is why homeowners swear the leak is intermittent and imaginary.
The bottom is the end of the road. If water comes out of the shell seam or around the reset button, the grinding chamber has corroded through from the inside. There is no gasket down there to replace. Anybody who says they can seal it is selling you a short delay.

Fix it or swap it, and how to size the replacement
Clearing a jam is the cheapest possible outcome, and half the time you do it yourself with the wrench in the junk drawer. A service call to free a jam, replace a switch, or reseal a flange commonly runs in the low hundreds along the Front Range. Swapping in a new unit with the old one hauled off generally lands in the mid hundreds including the disposal itself, more if the wiring has to change or the sink opening is a nonstandard size.
The replacement rule is short. Any leak from the motor housing, any chamber with a rust hole in it, any unit past ten or twelve years that has developed a reset habit: replace it. A jam, a dead switch, a leaking gasket, or a chewed-up splash guard: repair it.
Sizing gets oversold at the store. Half a horsepower grinds what a normal household feeds it, and stepping to three-quarters mostly buys quieter operation and fewer jams rather than raw capability. What actually matters is height and mount pattern. A deep bowl over a shallow cabinet leaves less room than you'd guess, and a taller unit can drop the discharge below the trap arm, which forces a plumbing change nobody put in the quote. If your existing mounting assembly matches the new unit, the swap is an hour. If it doesn't, add flange work to the day.
One local wrinkle worth naming: on septic systems, common on the bigger lots around Monument and out past the edges of Brighton, everything a disposal grinds lands in the tank as solids and shortens the pumping interval. Plenty of households out there treat the disposal as a garnish and compost the rest, which is a defensible choice.
Water from the bottom of the unit means replacement, not repair. Water from the top usually means putty and twenty minutes. Anything humming is jammed until proven otherwise, and jams cost nothing to fix. Sort your problem into those three buckets before anyone quotes a number, and you will not get talked into hardware you don't need.

Three things, in order: corrosion, diet, and running it dry. Corrosion is time plus moisture, and a galvanized chamber gives up years before a stainless one does. Diet is what you feed it. Running it dry is what happens when somebody flips the switch and forgets the tap.
Fibrous and starchy waste does the real damage. Celery strings and artichoke leaves wrap around the lugs. Potato peels and rice turn to paste, pack the chamber, then set up in the trap arm below. Coffee grounds behave like wet sand and settle in any flat horizontal run, which matters more in older Denver homes still draining through crusty cast iron than in a 2015 Erie build with new PVC at a proper pitch.
Run cold water, not hot. Cold keeps fats solid so the unit can break them up and carry them along. Hot melts grease that re-solidifies twenty feet downstream where nobody can reach it. Let the water run a good ten or fifteen seconds after the grinding noise smooths out.
And the smell, since everyone asks about the smell. It isn't the drain. It's decay clinging to the underside of the rubber splash guard, an inch from your nose every time you lean over the sink. Cut the power, fold the flaps back with a rag, and scrub them. If the guard is torn or gone floppy, replace it. Many units let you pull the baffle out by hand, which is worth checking before you start buying citrus peels by the bag.
