A disposal is a ten-year appliance bolted to a drain, wired to a switch, and usually tied into a dishwasher. Most installs go fine. The ones that don't come down to a knockout plug, a corroded sink flange, or an outlet nobody put under the cabinet.

How much disposal you actually need
Horsepower is the number on the box and the least useful thing about it. A 1/2 hp unit handles a normal household. Bigger motors help if you cook constantly or run a lot of vegetable scraps, and they help mostly by stalling less often, not by grinding finer. The real gap between a cheap unit and a good one is motor type, grind chamber material, and sound insulation.
Induction motors run slower, quieter, and with more torque than the permanent magnet motors in budget units. Stainless grind components resist the corrosion that galvanized ones develop in hard-water kitchens around Brighton, Firestone, and Commerce City. And insulation matters more than people expect in open-plan kitchens, which is most of what's been built in Erie and Castle Rock since 2005. A cheap disposal in an open great room is a household event.
Batch feed models grind only when a magnetic stopper is seated, which removes the classic hazard of an open chamber and a live switch. They cost more and take longer to work through a sink full of scraps. Households with small kids often decide that trade is worth making.
Septic changes the conversation entirely. On acreage around Monument and on the hobby farms east of Brighton, a disposal adds solids to a tank with a fixed capacity. Some households add one and pump more often. Some skip it and compost instead. Both answers are defensible.

Mounting rings, knockouts, and wiring
Nearly every residential disposal hangs from one of two mount systems. The three-bolt mount uses a sink flange, fiber gasket, backup ring, and mounting ring tightened evenly against the underside of the sink. The quick-mount style twists onto a single ring. Same idea either way: a rope of plumber's putty under the flange, even tightening so it sits flat, and no shortcuts, because that joint is all that keeps the sink from draining into the cabinet.
Then the discharge. The tube leaving the disposal has to line up with the P-trap, and in older kitchens it often doesn't, because the trap arm sits too high for the new unit's outlet. That's normal and fixable with new tubular parts. A cast iron or galvanized drain arm in a 1955 Lakewood ranch is the exception, since old metal can fracture the moment it's disturbed. That risk belongs in the quote conversation up front.
The dishwasher knockout is the most common install mistake in this whole category. New disposals ship with a plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be driven out with a screwdriver and the loose plug retrieved before the drain hose goes on. Leave it in and the dishwasher backs up on its first cycle. Knock it loose and leave it rattling in the chamber, and you get a noise nobody enjoys. Wiring is where the rules stop being suggestions. Disposals want a dedicated switched circuit, most ship without a power cord, and cord kits sell separately. Working on an appliance in a damp cabinet with the breaker on is exactly the wrong risk to accept. If there's no outlet under your sink, an electrician belongs in the plan.
Installation cost, and when to stop and call someone
Costs split cleanly. The unit is retail: roughly a hundred dollars for a basic model up to several hundred for a quiet 3/4 hp with stainless components. Front Range labor for a straightforward replacement, meaning an existing outlet, an existing mount, and a sound drain, commonly lands in the low hundreds. A first-time install where no disposal existed costs more, because somebody has to add a switch and an outlet and rework the drain.
The jobs that run long are predictable. A corroded sink flange that fights removal. A brittle cast iron drain arm. A granite or composite sink where the flange has to be handled gently. A dishwasher air gap that needs adding. Or a cabinet floor that turns out to have been soaked for a while. None of that is exotic, and all of it changes the number.
Do it yourself if you're replacing like for like, the wiring already exists, and you can get comfortable under a cabinet. Call somebody if there's no outlet, if the old flange won't break loose, if the drain is old metal, or if the cabinet is already wet. And if you smell anything electrical or see scorching at the wiring cover, cut the breaker first and ask questions after.
The appliance is cheap. The cabinet floor under it is not.
- If it hums but won't spinsomething is wedged against the shredder ring. Cut the power at the breaker, free the plate from the socket underneath, then press the reset.
- If the reset button keeps trippingthe motor is failing or something is still lodged in the chamber. Replacement is usually the honest answer.
- If water drips from the bottom seamthe internal seal is gone and that housing can't be rebuilt. Replace the unit.
- If it only leaks at the sink flangethe mount needs to come apart and be reset with fresh putty. The disposal itself is fine.

Grease is the headline. It goes down warm and liquid, meets a cold pipe under a slab or in an unheated crawlspace, and hardens into a ring that catches everything arriving behind it. On this corridor that pipe runs cold from October into April, which is why kitchen line calls stack up between Thanksgiving and February. Pour fat into a can, not the sink. Fibrous vegetables wrap around the impellers instead of shredding: celery, corn husks, artichoke leaves, onion skins. Starches swell, so rice and pasta turn into paste somewhere downstream. Coffee grounds are the sneaky one, slipping through the chamber intact and then dropping out of suspension wherever the pipe runs flat. Eggshells are mostly harmless despite the folklore, though the membrane strings up like anything else fibrous. Bones and fruit pits belong in the trash.
Run cold water before, during, and for twenty seconds after grinding. Cold keeps fats solid so they get chopped and carried out instead of coating the pipe wall on the way down. Hot water does the opposite. That single habit does more for a kitchen drain than any product sold to fix one later.
A disposal doesn't fix a slow drain and it can't outmuscle one. If the sink drains slowly with the disposal off, the trouble is downstream in the branch line or the main, and grinding more into it only adds to the pile.

Garbage Disposal Installation: quick answers
My disposal just hums. Does that mean I need a new one?
Usually not. A hum means the motor has power and the plate can't rotate, which is nearly always a jam rather than a dead motor. Kill power at the switch and the breaker, work the plate loose from the socket on the bottom of the housing, clear whatever comes out, and press the reset. Replacement enters the picture if it keeps tripping or the housing weeps at the seam.
Does my dishwasher need an air gap, or is a high loop enough?
Both prevent the same thing: dirty sink water siphoning back into the dishwasher. A high loop routes the drain hose up under the countertop before it drops to the disposal, and an air gap is the small chrome cylinder on the sink deck. Requirements vary by jurisdiction along this corridor, so ask your installer what your local inspector expects before you skip the air gap.
Will a disposal hurt the old cast iron drain in my 1950s house?
The disposal itself won't. What changes is what you're sending into a line that's already lined with rust and scale, and that rough surface catches ground food and grease which smooth PVC would carry away. Older homes in Denver, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood do fine with a disposal as long as fat stays out of it and cold water runs during every use.
