Some pipe can't be rehabilitated. When a lateral has collapsed, lost its grade, or run out of wall thickness, the fix is a trench, new pipe, proper bedding, and a yard that needs putting back. Here's what drives the number and the disruption.

When the trench is the honest answer
Excavation gets treated like a failure of imagination, as if a sharper contractor would have found a clever way around it. Sometimes there isn't one. A pipe that has collapsed has no shape left to line. A pipe that has lost its pitch keeps collecting waste no matter how smooth you make the inside. And a lateral cut, patched, and offset by three different owners since 1961 has nothing left to build on.
The clearest cases show up on camera as a hard stop: the picture goes to dirt and the counter reads 34 feet. Others are subtler. Back-pitch, where the line runs slightly uphill toward the main, guarantees a permanent low spot, and the only real correction is resetting the pipe on a proper grade. That means opening the ground.
Material narrows it further. Intact clay is a candidate for lining. Cast iron near the foundation scales and thins from the inside out. And the occasional mid-century bituminous fiber pipe, the stuff sold as Orangeburg, deforms into an oval as it ages and gets replaced rather than rehabilitated. A scope identifies which one you own before anybody quotes a price on it.
Depth, surface, and the shape of the hole
Laterals leave the house a few feet down and drop as they run toward the main, because gravity is doing all the work. Deeper trenches need wider excavations and shoring, both of which cost money, and both of which turn a one-day job into a multi-day one. Depth at the connection point is often the single biggest number in the bid that nobody mentions at the kitchen table.
Then there's what's on top. Sod is cheap to put back. A concrete driveway, a flagstone patio, or a mature landscape with 40-year-old junipers is not, and sidewalk or street cuts bring their own restoration standards and inspection steps. On the tight pre-war lots in Littleton and Englewood there's frequently nowhere to stage the spoil pile except the neighbor's parkway, which is a conversation worth having before the machine shows up.
Weather runs the schedule out here too. Frost in the ground through a January cold snap makes the first two feet miserable, spring runoff can turn a deep trench into a pumping job, and saturated backfill compacts differently than dry. Emergencies happen in every month of the year. Planned replacements go easier in September than in February, and the crew's calendar reflects that.
Utility locates come first. Gas, water, electric, and communication lines all share that corridor, and the ones marked are the ones a crew can avoid. Hand digging near marked utilities is normal, and slow. So is discovering an unmarked irrigation main at three in the afternoon. A crew that plans for that is a crew that finishes on schedule.
What actually drives the price
Front Range sewer replacement quotes swing widely, and the swing isn't about the pipe. PVC is inexpensive. Labor, depth, equipment access, and putting the surface back are where the money lives, which is why two houses on the same block can come back thousands of dollars apart for the same length of line.
Full lateral replacements on this corridor commonly reach into five figures, with short sectional repairs landing meaningfully lower when the failure is isolated and shallow. Ask every bidder to break out excavation, pipe and fittings, backfill and compaction, restoration, and permitting and inspection as separate lines. The bid that looks cheapest usually turns out to be the one that left restoration off the page entirely.
Then make the scope call. Replacing 15 feet of failed pipe in a 70-foot clay lateral solves today's backup and leaves 55 feet of the same aged pipe with the same joints. Sometimes that's the right economics, particularly if the rest scoped clean and the roots are manageable. Sometimes it's a down payment on doing this again in four years. Weigh it against the trenchless numbers before you decide.

Trenches settle. Backfill placed in lifts and compacted properly still gives up some volume over the first year, especially through a wet spring, and you should expect to add soil and reseed once the ground has told you where it wants to sink. Ask up front who comes back for that. Good outfits schedule it. Others consider the check cashed.
Bedding deserves one direct question. New pipe wants to sit on granular material at a consistent grade, not on the rocky clay that came out of the hole. Pipe laid straight onto lumps of native soil develops a sag in the exact place you just paid to eliminate. Nobody can see the bedding once it's covered, which is precisely why you ask while the trench is still open.
Finish the job on paper. Collect the post-work camera video, the inspection sign-off, and a sketch or photos showing where the new line runs and how deep it sits. Keep all of it with your closing documents. The next scope, the next landscaper with an auger, and the next buyer's inspector will each be glad it exists. A replacement gets judged years later on things you can't see from the surface: bedding, grade, compaction, and how the new pipe ties in at each end. Ask about all four while the trench is open, photograph it before the backfill goes in, and keep the final video. That folder is the warranty that actually holds up.

How long will my yard be torn up?
A shallow lateral in an accessible backyard can be dug, replaced, and backfilled in a day or two. Deep lines, driveway or street cuts, and tight access stretch that into a week or more, and restoration is often scheduled separately after the inspection clears. Ask for both timelines in writing, because they're frequently handled by two different crews.
Do I have to replace the whole line?
Not necessarily. If the camera shows one failed section and the rest of the pipe scopes clean with good grade, a spot repair is defensible. If the line is old clay with open joints end to end, replacing 12 feet of it buys a short reprieve at full excavation prices. The video decides that, not the symptom.
What pipe goes back in the ground?
Modern residential replacements are almost always solid-wall PVC with gasketed or solvent-welded joints, or fused HDPE when the line is pulled through rather than laid in a trench. Both outlast clay by a wide margin, and neither hands roots a joint to work on. Ask which one your bid includes and what it's being bedded on.
