Your sprinkler system lives on two dates

Irrigation is the only plumbing on your property that's supposed to sit bone dry for seven months. That one fact drives almost everything below. Get the water out before the first hard freeze, put it back in after the last one, and most of what's left is nozzles, wire splices, and a controller nobody has reprogrammed since 2019.

The catch is that those two dates move as you drive up I-25. Monument, at 6,961 feet on the Palmer Divide, historically sees its first freeze around September 22. Denver typically waits until about October 7. Fifteen days doesn't sound like much. It's the difference between a routine fall chore and a cracked brass assembly you'll be arguing about in May.

And elevation isn't the whole story. Firestone and Longmont sit lower than Denver, right around 4,970 feet, yet they historically freeze about a week earlier. Clear nights over open plains shed heat fast, and there's no dense urban core out there holding warmth after dark. So the tidy rule (higher means earlier) breaks in exactly the towns where thousands of new irrigated lawns went in over the past twenty years.

Freeze doesn't take the whole system at once, either. It takes the brass first. Four jobs, one season

Sprinkler work sorts into four jobs, and they run in a fixed order. Fall brings the blowout and winterization. Spring brings startup, then a backflow test, then whatever repairs the startup just exposed. Skip one and the next one costs more.

A blowout pushes compressed air through the mainline and out through every zone until the heads run dry. Volume does the work here, not pressure.
