What Denver Water and the USGS actually say

Denver Water classifies its water as soft to moderately hard. That is the utility's own language, not a marketing line, and it arrives with a wrinkle worth knowing: the classification is not uniform across the system. Denver Water's southern collection system runs moderately hard, while its northern system is somewhat soft. Which one is feeding your street depends on where you live and how the system is being operated.

Hardness itself is nothing exotic. It is dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate. The USGS publishes the scale everyone works from, and Denver Water cites those same thresholds: soft is under 60 mg/L, moderately hard is 61 to 120, hard is 121 to 180, and anything over 180 is very hard. Plumbers and softener salespeople often talk in grains per gallon instead, which is the same measurement wearing different clothes. One grain per gallon comes out to roughly 17.1 mg/L, so converting between the two takes arithmetic and nothing else.

We are not going to hand you a single grains-per-gallon figure for Denver Water, and you should be a little suspicious of any page that does. Hardness moves with the collection system, the season, and the district boundary your house happens to sit inside. Where the corridor stops being soft

Source explains most of it. Denver Water collects surface water that began as mountain snowpack, and snowmelt has not had much opportunity to dissolve anything on its way down. Districts out in Weld and Adams counties lean much harder on groundwater, alluvial and deep, and water that has spent time moving through rock picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium along the way. Groundwater districts generally test harder than a mountain surface supply for that reason alone. It is why two houses twenty-five minutes apart can lead completely different plumbing lives.

Hardness does not corrode your pipe. It deposits. In a storage water heater the calcium drops out of suspension as the water heats and settles on the tank floor as a crust, which insulates the burner from the water it is trying to heat. That is the rumbling and popping people describe, and it is also why the tank runs longer for the same shower and gives up earlier than the warranty implied. The rest of the house takes it more quietly. Aerators clog. Shower cartridges stiffen and start to drip. Dishwashers leave a film that no amount of rinse aid fixes. None of that is dramatic on any single day, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed for years and then arrives all at once as a run of small repairs.

The practical contrast is worth stating plainly. A house on Denver Water with a 50-gallon tank and a yearly flush can generally expect to get the appliance's full service life out of it. A house on one of the harder groundwater districts north or east of the metro, flushing nothing, generally will not. Same appliance, same installer, different water. If you are shopping for water heater work out in Weld County, that difference matters more than the brand on the box.

Hardness is an appliance problem, not a health problem. Nobody gets sick from calcium. On Denver Water's soft to moderately hard supply, a yearly water heater flush is close to the whole maintenance story. On the harder groundwater districts north and east of the metro, the same appliance ages faster, and it shows up as a run of small repairs rather than one dramatic failure.

Is a water softener worth it here?

For most Denver Water customers, no. Soft to moderately hard supply does not build the kind of scale that pays a softener back, and you would be buying salt, a backwash cycle, and a standing maintenance chore to solve a problem you largely do not have. Put that money toward an annual water heater flush and a decent replacement shower cartridge, and you will be further ahead.

Out on the harder groundwater districts the answer flips, and it flips hardest for anyone running a tankless unit. Before buying any equipment, get your number. Pull the report, find the hardness figure, and compare it against the USGS thresholds in the table above. Then decide from that number instead of from a demonstration at your kitchen sink. It is also worth knowing that a softener has a downstream cost: the brine discharge from every regeneration cycle goes into your drains, and over decades that is not free. One more thing worth checking before you spend anything: whether what you are seeing is actually hardness. White crust at the aerator, spotting on glassware, and film on the dishwasher door are hardness. Weak flow at one fixture while the rest of the house is fine is almost always a clogged aerator screen or a tired cartridge, and no softener ever built will fix that. Diagnose the fixture first, then the water.

Lead lines, filters, and the report to actually read

Hardness is the question people ask. Lead is the one worth asking right afterward, and Denver has a real answer to it. Denver Water runs a Lead Reduction Program that replaces customer-owned lead service lines with copper at no direct charge to the customer. It is scoped to run 15 years and covers an estimated 60,000 to 64,000 properties. Customers enrolled in the program receive a certified pitcher along with replacement filters, and those filters continue until six months after their line has been replaced. Two things get conflated constantly, so separate them now. A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium and does nothing whatsoever about lead. A certified lead filter reduces lead and does nothing whatsoever about hardness. Different problems, different equipment, and a salesperson who blurs the line between them is telling you something about themselves.

So the sequence is simple. Find your utility, download this year's water quality report, and write down two things: the hardness figure and whatever the report says about lead and service line material. If you are a Denver Water customer, check your service line status with them directly rather than guessing from the age of the house. If you are on a district out in Adams or Weld county, your report is the only number that describes your water, and it will tell you more than any regional average ever could.

Then act on what you found, in that order. Hardness above the moderate range means a maintenance schedule, and possibly equipment. A lead service line means a call. Everything else on the report is usually reassuring, which is worth knowing too.
