Two machines, two different purchases. A cable clears the path so water moves again. A jetter strips the pipe wall back to something close to the diameter it was built with. The gap between their prices is real, and it comes down to which line, how you reach it, and what is stuck inside.

What jetting actually does inside the pipe
Cabling and jetting get sold as two versions of the same service. They aren't. A cable is a rotating steel snake with a cutter on the end, and its job is to make an opening. It goes in, it spins, it bores through whatever is in the way, water starts moving, the sink drains. What it has not done is clean the pipe. The grease or scale lining that line is still lining it, minus a hole the width of the cutter head.
A jetter works from the other direction. It's a high-pressure pump feeding a stiff hose with a nozzle whose jets mostly point backward. Those rear jets drag the hose downstream on their own thrust until it reaches the far end of the run. Then the operator pulls it back slowly, and on the way back those same jets hit the pipe wall at an angle and sweep everything they strip toward the cleanout. Wall to wall, rather than a tunnel through the middle.
Two numbers describe the machine, and homeowners get sold on the wrong one. Pressure cuts. Flow carries. A unit with impressive psi and modest gallons per minute will slice a grease ring apart and leave the pieces sitting in the line to reassemble forty feet downstream. Ask a bidder what the gpm is, not just the psi, and pay attention to whether the answer comes easily.
The difference worth paying for is diameter. A four-inch clay lateral carrying a quarter inch of grease and root fiber on every surface is functionally a three-inch line, and it behaves like one every time somebody runs a load of laundry during a shower. Jetting takes it back toward four. Cabling takes it back to a two-inch hole through a three-inch problem, which drains beautifully on the day and quietly closes again on its own schedule.
Jetting versus cabling, and which one you actually need
Cabling wins on speed, cost and access. It runs down a roof vent when there's no cleanout, needs no water supply, and for a single blockage in an otherwise healthy line it puts a household back in service inside an hour for meaningfully less money. If your kitchen sink backed up once, in a house with no history of it, cabling is the correct purchase. Buying a jetting for that is buying protection you don't need yet.
Jetting wins on anything that coats. Grease and soap fat in a kitchen main. Sand and silt collecting in a floor drain. Mineral scale inside an old cast iron stack. And the greasy film that holds fine root hair against a clay joint, which is the part a cable never touches even when it cuts the roots themselves. If the same line has backed up twice in eighteen months, you don't have a clog problem. You have a buildup problem, and a cable will happily sell you that same visit again next spring.
Roots are where the comparison gets misread. A root cutter on a cable does remove roots, and it does it well. What it leaves behind is the mat of grease and fiber those roots grew into, which is precisely the surface the next generation needs to get started. Cutting and then jetting is a common one-two, and on a line you intend to keep for another decade it's a defensible spend.

What actually moves the number
Start with the honest framing. Everything below is market observation from reading quotes on this corridor, hedged and rounded on purpose. None of it is a quote, and none of it is our own project data, because Denver.Plumbing has no completed jobs to average yet. Which line is being cleaned matters most. A kitchen branch or a laundry line is a short two-inch run and the machine is in and out. A main sewer lateral is four inches and can travel seventy or a hundred feet to the street, which costs time at every stage of the job. A commercial grease line is its own category and generally its own price, often about twice a straightforward residential main and sometimes more than that.
Access is the cheapest lever you control. A ground-level cleanout with a cap that comes off is the fast path and the cheap one. A cleanout buried under eight years of mulch and a juniper adds time before the machine even starts. No cleanout at all means pulling a toilet or working off a roof vent, slower and harder on the hose, and that commonly adds something like a quarter to half again onto the visit. Locating your cleanout on a Saturday in September costs nothing. Having a technician hunt for it in January is not free.
What's inside the pipe sets the rest. Routine soft buildup comes off quickly. Heavy grease or hardened scale means more passes, more nozzle changes, more hours. Roots mean a cutting head first, then the jetter, and often a second camera pass to judge whether the joint they came through needs repair rather than cleaning. A camera pass before jetting isn't an upsell, it's the step that tells the operator whether jetting is safe at all. Vitrified clay laterals, the default under a great deal of pre-war Denver, Englewood and Wheat Ridge, come in short sections with mortared joints that shift as the soil moves. Some of them are already cracked and holding together on friction and packed dirt. Push a few thousand psi into that and you can turn a line that was seeping slowly into a line that has collapsed and filled with soil. A camera inspection is cheap next to that outcome.
The same caution covers old orangeburg, cast iron that's gone thin from the inside out, and any pipe where the camera shows a belly holding standing water. Jetting a belly cleans it and changes nothing about the fact that it will fill again next month, because the problem there is grade, not grease. A good operator says that out loud and starts talking about repair. Somebody who jets every line he's called to is running a route, not diagnosing a pipe.
Know where your responsibility starts, too. Denver's wastewater division states plainly that the city is responsible only for main public sewers, and that for a private tap or service line homeowners need to hire a licensed plumbing company. The city also asks residents to report a backup immediately. If the fault sits in the public main, that's their crew and their cleanup. One last test of whether the money did its job. If a line gets jetted once and then runs clean for a year or more, that was a good purchase. If the same line needs it every six months, you're renting a solution to a structural problem, and the honest math is to put those repeat visits toward a trenchless repair or a liner instead. Cleaning is maintenance. It was never meant to be a subscription.
Jetting earns its price when a camera has shown you a structurally sound pipe with a coating problem. It's a poor buy on a one-time clog and a genuinely bad idea on cracked clay. Scope first, ask for the video with distance markers, and judge the result by how long the line stays clean rather than how fast it drained on the day.

Is hydro jetting worth the extra cost over snaking?
It depends entirely on why the line stopped. For a first-time backup at one fixture, snaking is the right money and jetting is overkill. For a line that keeps backing up, or one a camera shows coated in grease, scale or root film, jetting is the only one of the two that removes the cause. Paying twice for cabling on a buildup problem costs more than jetting it once.
How long does hydro jetting last?
On a structurally sound line, a proper jetting commonly holds for a year or more, and kitchen mains in heavy-cooking households sit at the shorter end of that. The honest signal is repetition. If a jetted line needs cleaning again inside six months, the pipe itself has a defect: a belly, an offset joint, or a break letting roots and soil back in. Cleaning won't fix any of those.
Can hydro jetting damage old pipes?
Yes, and this is the real caution rather than a legal disclaimer. Vitrified clay laterals, deteriorated orangeburg, and cast iron thinned from the inside can all be pushed past failure by high-pressure water, especially where a joint has already cracked and is being held in place by surrounding soil. That's why a camera pass belongs before the jetter, not after it.
Do I need a camera inspection before hydro jetting?
On a main sewer line, treat it as required rather than optional. The scope tells the operator the pipe material, whether joints are offset, whether roots are entering, and whether the line can survive the pressure. It also gives you a before-and-after record. On a two-inch kitchen branch in a modern house, the case is weaker and most operators will jet without one.
Who pays for hydro jetting, me or the city?
In Denver, the split follows ownership.
